It has been awfully quiet around here recently. The local sports scene is heating up, but the complaining is cooling off. And for good reason.
The Ravens have already exceeded all expectations just three games into the season. The defense, with some minor complaints about the pass rush, is itself. The offense looks like they should have horseshoes or tri-cornered hats on their helmets. It seems that every neutral observer* thinks the Ravens are the best team in football going into New England this weekend.
*Even the biased ones, which is even more important since they tend to be the source of much of the angst behind the Baltimore Inferiority Complex.
The Orioles are finishing another losing season on an even worse note than usual. However, it seems that a general numbness to the losing among most fans combined with the knowledge that this team is different than those in the past are eliminating most of the debate. Plus, most of what can be argued isn't going to happen until the off-season, which is a week away.
Some subjects, such as the retention of manager Dave Trembley, will spark debate no matter which way the move is made.
The Terps are off to a disappointing start, to say the least. But that really only effects a certain few of us who follow them closely. Towson is 1-2, but again not too many are paying attention, and UMBC is undefeated and untied* for the millennium.
*And unvictorious, if you catch my drift.
College basketball won't start for three more weeks, and I'm sure when Maryland beats a team they shouldn't and loses to a team they shouldn't they will draw some comment. As may UMBC, especially now that Binghamton's program is self-destructing after their temporary surge to the top of that conference. Even Towson, if they start slow, could bring about some angsty calls for the removal of their coach, some of which could even come from someone other than myself.
Don't take the slow times around here as a sign of the commitment to the site by its authors. Take it as a slow period in the local sports scene, and once the college and pro football seasons advance further and both college and pro basketball start up there will be plenty of complaining for you to read.

You forgot one very important thing that's making Baltimore sports fans uncharacteristically happy and placid... the Steelers are 1-2!!!
I pay attention to TU Football, but I'm sorta obligated.
Trust me, I have a LOT to say about the Binghamton situation but I'm not so sure how much of it belongs on a Baltimore sports blog. The two best players in UMBC history (who both _graduated_ in May and as far as I know have never been arrested) had their careers ended by a team who's own school now considers them too disreputable to play college basketball. This year UMBC will be rebuilding (hopefully a whole lot faster than certain other Baltimore teams which have currently lost 13 games in a row) and having their best remaining player ineligible for the fall certainly won't help. They should finish ahead of Binghamton, Maine and hopefully Hartford. Anything more than that is a bonus. Thanks for the shout out though, it's nice to know people finally realize UMBC exists. :)
Well, I figured after the football shot I should at least throw you all a bone there :P
